Helping users manage their Diabetes through Diet lifestyle changes

Overview

In recent years. Singapore has seen a steady growth rate of diabetes cases with an alarming rise of youth being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which are lifestyle induced. Our client would like to develop an app to help users with their Diabetes management.

The Problem

Based on our research findings, users recognised that diet control through meal logging is essential but hard to do as they find it a hassle to log meals.

Secondly, users felt alone in this journey of diabetes journey especially if they are the only one in the family or friends that suffers from this condition. They find it hard to be motivated to maintain their new eating habits and lifestyle.

Our Solution

We created an app that enables users to easily log their meals by utilising our clients' Artificial Intelligence technology as well as using of visual infographics. The app also includes a social platform, providing a community to support and motivate the user in their diabetes management journey.

Our High Level goals are:

  • To make the app easy to use and intuitive for wide age range of diabetes patients

  • To encourage self motivation in controlling their diet and lifestyle when using this app

Initial Discovery phrase

To be sure we're addressing the right problems we designed our process around regular cycles of prototyping and face to face user sessions, validating every step of the way with the input from real users. Our starting point was to interview 8 patients with diabetes who have lived and coped with diabetes for at least 3 years. We wanted to find out more how they cope with diabetes.

Insights garnered

Diet is key in managing diabetic condition

100%

of users believe that food is essential in controlling their diabetic condition. They view Food tracking beneficial and helpful to manage their blood glucose level. However they are not doing so as they find it a hassle and the lack of motivation to persevere in their Food logging activities

60%

of users want to receive social and emotional support to motivate themselves to try a new active lifestyle

A social community platform is viewed as beneficial to support users’ health journey

Desire for health advice beyond healthcare professionals

90%

of users use a wide-range of outlets to gain information to improve their wellness as they view knowledge important in controlling their diabetes.

Persona

After synthesizing the insights from our research, we created a persona based on the needs of their diabetes journey.

Customer Journey Map

After defining the problem, we mapped out the opportunities of a diabetic patient with a customer journey map showing how the patient journey from discovery to being consistent with the condition.

We decided to concentrate on the adjustment and coping stages of the patient’s journey where patients’ require the most support and motivation to be able to change their lifestyle.

Sketches

After creating the user flow, we brainstormed ideas and started to sketch the design before drawing up our mid Fi wireframes. Our wireframe went through 1 iteration after being reviewed by the client

Once we were confident with the structure and flow of the app, we turn our focus on developing the UI components, design system, logo and branding of the product.

Design System

The complex nature of the app necessitated more than 100 screens covering user on-boarding, meal logging, Health Data, Resources and Community features.

To maintain consistency and ensure efficient design for handover to our client, we developed a modular design system based on reusable components and their states, such as cards, navigation bar, buttons and logos. Every component can be rearranged and combined with others while maintaining design consistency and recognisable UI patterns for the user.

App features after 2 rounds of usability testing

Homepage

Users are able to have an overview of all the recent content from his food diary, his health stats to the groups he is following in the community. This overview format on the homepage allows the user to have easy access to the latest information on his homepage

We have also colour coded the different sections in the app. This allows for easy recognition when scrolling through the Homepage (e.g Red for resources, Blue for Community, Green for Health Data and Yellow for Meal Logging.

A.I Food Scanner and Tutorial for food Log

We utilise A.I technology to scan and identify the food which improves efficiency in the Food logging process. 100% of the users during the usability testing was supportive of this as it would save time in logging their meal which was a hassle in the past.

As we had to cater to a wide range of diabetes users,  we included a short onboarding tutorial for first time users to guide them through the process of how to log their meals. This was identified during our usability testing as 50% of users were unsure of the food logging process. This tutorial would allow them to learn about the features and functions of logging their meals.

Food Logging and Visual Infographic

Users are able to add any food items and to adjust the portion size as needed. 60% users during the usability testing has stated that this gives them more accountability and will empower them as they are involved in the process of choosing a healthy meal.

Users have commented that the use of visual infographic to rate the meal is easy for them to understand and visually appealing to them.

Gamification of the Food Diary

Drawing on the user interview, users need motivation to persevere in logging food. To motivate and encourage users to not only log their meals daily but log healthy meals, we gamify the food dairy to add a healthy streak to motivate users on their food logging journey.

Resources

Based on our user interview, users desire for health information other than the information they receive from their medical professionals. The app provides resources that relates to general health. This gives users a more holistic approach to improve their health.

Community

Sugrcare community is to help users get motivation and emotionally support from the community when getting started on new activities, persevering in their current activity or diet. This ensures that users are accountable to their community in their activities. Users are able to search and join groups of their interest, connecting with other like minded users. Sharing of information can be easily done through posting their food tips or pictures to the group.

My takeaway

Our biggest challenge was to find target users for our usability testing to gain more insights on this project in order for us to better understand the challenges of a patient being diagnosed with diabetes. My takeaway from this project is firstly to really to put in the effort to recruit the right users to do your research and testing on as it will affect your product design. In addition, it was a good experience to see how the team was able to balance the client’s business goals and the user's needs for the design of the app.
